Futurepoem x Reverie Series: A discussion and reading 10/12 Cuny Grad NYC
Join us for a conversation on reimagining the poetics of small-press publishing with Futurepoem Founder & Executive Editor Dan Machlin, Managing Editor Aiden Farrell, and Futurepoem authors Stephon Lawrence (u know how much i hate being alone in social situations//, 2023) and Mirene Arsanios (The Autobiography of a Language: Essays and Stories, 2022), followed by readings from their work. Moderated by Jared Daniel Fagen, this event will take place in room 5414 and is hosted by REVERIE and the Department of Comparative Literature at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Adjua Gargi Nzinga Greaves (New York City, b. 1980) writes ethnobotanical literary criticism and collages detritus into heraldic devices. Greaves has most recently been published in The Brooklyn Rail, and Letters to the Future: Black Women / Radical Writing (Kore Press). Her chapbook Close Reading As Forestry is published by Belladonna*. A publication with Ugly Duckling Presse is forthcoming in 2020. Formerly a Monday Night Reading Series curator at The Poetry Project, Site Director for Wendy's Subway, and an artist-in-residence at Rauschenberg Residency, she is currently based in New York City where she is Young Mother of The Florxal Review.

Ken Chen is the recipient of the Yale Younger Poets Award, the oldest annual literary award in America, for his book Juvenilia, which was selected by the poet Louise Glück. He served as the Executive Director of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop from 2008 to May 2019. An NEA, NYFA and Bread Loaf Fellow and National Book Award judge, Chen co-founded the cultural website Arts & Letters Daily and CultureStrike, a national arts organization dedicated to migrant justice. He has been quoted in NPR’s All Things Considered, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, The New Republic, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. A graduate of Yale Law School, he successfully defended the asylum application of an undocumented Muslim high school student from Guinea detained by Homeland Security. He is currently a Cullman Fellow at the New York Public Library, where he is working on Death Star, a book about his traveling to the underworld and seeing there everything that has been destroyed by colonialism. He is represented by The Wylie Agency.

Kim Rosenfield is a poet and psychotherapist. She is the author of several books of poetry, including USO: I’ll Be Seeing You from Ugly Duckling Presse. Rosenfield is an originating member of the international artist/writers collective, Collective Task. Her clinical writing can be found in Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Studies in Gender and Sexuality.

Rachelle Rahmé is a poet and researcher. Her poems have recently appeared in The Brooklyn Rail and the Poetry Foundation's Harriet Blog. Her first collection of poems, Count Thereof Upon the Others Limbs, was published by Cisoux72's imprint 72 Press in 2019. Her manuscript "Bataille's Eggs" is a current finalist for b l u s h lit's 2020 chapbook open reading period, and a portion of her work on the archive of Sylvère Lottringer was recently commissioned by Issue Project Room for their Isolated Field Recording Series. Born in Lebanon, she writes and works in Queens, NY.

Peter Gizzi is the author of eight collections of poetry, most recently, Sky Burial, just out in the UK from Carcanet, other recent titles include Archeophonics (Finalist for 2016 The National Book Award), In Defense of Nothing, and Threshold Songs. A new collection, Now It’s Dark, will be published by Wesleyan in the fall. His honors include fellowships from The Rex Foundation, The Howard Foundation, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He has twice been the recipient of The Judith E. Wilson Visiting Fellowship in Poetry at the University of Cambridge. He works at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Francis Weiss Rabkin writes plays, poetry, and soon, television. Their plays have been developed and staged in Philadelphia, Chicago, and in New York at HERE Arts, Dixon Place, Bushwick Starr, the Prelude Festival (Selected by Jackie Sibblies Drury), The Brick, and the New York Theatre Workshop. They were a 2050 Fellow at the New York Theatre Workshop (2016-17) and has been recognized by The Kilroys List (honorable mention 2015) and the Playwrights Foundation's Bay Area Playwrights Festival (semi-finalist 2019). Their latest play, Covenant, recently received a development reading at the New York Theatre Workshop.

Futurepoem celebrates the publication of G, by Emmalea Russo, with Anna Moschovakis. Corina Copp writes "it is tempting to call G a meditation on perception, but it’s always-already clear-eyed: often, when the figure meets ground, the actual ground is already the figure, and Emmalea Russo understands these illusory but changeable optics (and her chosen medium) as much as her writing has lived and centered them—grounded, yes, by (tenderly) performed intimacy, tide, earth. G, a letter, lest we forget, too falls from geological time; and the poet’s linguistic figuring, seeing, breaking, and tending speak less to the reader than they do water her (during ambrosial hours, so that we do not burn). The work recalls, for me, Carla Harryman, Renee Gladman, Peter Greenaway’s reflective H is for House; but Russo’s responses to how 21st-cen. life interrupts and materializes fenestration (!) act as shelves in multiple Gs—where one might sit as if on a lover’s lap—and so become truly themselves: “Some things drop down into what space is cleared for.”
Emmalea Russo is an artist and writer. She received an MFA in Sculpture from Pratt Institute and has been in residence at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and 18th Street Arts Center in Los Angeles. G is her first book. Her second book, Wave Archive(Book*hug, 2019), is forthcoming.
Anna Moschovakis is the author most recently of the novel Eleanor, or, The Rejection of the Progress of Love (Coffee House Press, 2018). Her books of poetry include the James Laughlin award-winning You and Three Others Are Approaching a Lake and They and We Will Get Into Trouble for This. Her translations from French include Albert Cossery’s The Jokers, Annie Ernaux’s The Possession, and Bresson on Bresson, and experimental translations of and with the Algerian poet Samira Negrouche. A recipient of grants and fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts, The Poetry Fund, the Howard Foundation, and apexart, she has taught in the graduate writing programs at Bard, Pratt, and Columbia. She is a longtime member of the publishing collective Ugly Duckling Presse and a co-founder of Bushel, an art and community space in Delhi, NY.

Sean D. Henry-Smith is an image/text based artist working primarily in poetry and photography. Sean’s words and images have appeared in Apogee Journal, Tagvverk, Mask Magazine, Contemptorary, and elsewhere. Wild Peach is forthcoming from Futurepoem in 2019.
t'ai freedom ford is a New York City high school English teacher and Cave Canem Fellow. Her poetry, fiction, and essays have appeared in The African American Review, Apogee, Bomb Magazine, Calyx, Drunken Boat, Electric Literature, Gulf Coast, Kweli, Tin House, Obsidian, Poetry and others. Her work has also been featured in several anthologies including The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop and Nepantla: An Anthology Dedicated to Queer Poets of Color. Winner of the 2015 To the Lighthouse Poetry Prize, her first poetry collection, how to get over is available from Red Hen Press. Her second poetry collection, & more black, is forthcoming Spring 2019 from Augury Books. t’ai lives and loves in Brooklyn where she is an editor at No, Dear Magazine.
Saretta Morgan uses text and objects to consider relationships between privacy and narrative forms. She is the author of the chapbooks, Feeling Upon Arrival (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2018) and room for a counter interior (Portable Press @ Yo-Yo Labs, 2017) as well as a forthcoming full-length collection Plan Upon Arrival (Selva Oscura/Three Count Pour). She was a 2016-2017 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Resident and her work has received support from the Jerome Foundation, Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, among others. Saretta received a B.A. in writing from Columbia University and an MFA from Pratt Institute. She teaches creative writing at Arizona State University.

Jerika Marchan was born in Manila, Philippines and raised in the American South. A graduate of Louisiana State University and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she lives in New Orleans. SWOLE (Futurepoem, 2018) is her first book.

Adjua Gargi Nzinga Greaves (NYC, 1980) is an artist concerned with postcolonial ethnobotany and the mediums of scholarship, archival gesture, and language. She is a cocktail waitress, curator of the Monday Night Reading Series at the Poetry Project, Site Director of Wendy's Subway Library in Bushwick, and Young Mother of The Florxal Review. Greaves has been published in Letters to the Future: Black Women / Radical Writing (Kore Press, 2018), A propósito de nada / Apropos of nothing (Aeromoto + Wendy's Subway, 2017), The Black Earth Institute’s About Place Journal, The Recluse, and elsewhere, with work forthcoming in publications from Montez Press, and KAF Collective. In 2017 Belladonna* published her chaplet Close Reading As Forestry. Galleries of her documentary photography and Afrofuturist dioramas are viewable on Instagram via @TerraBot and @SuperModelStudioPractice respectively. She lives and works in New York City where she is studying to be a Master Sommelier.
A writer, vocalist and sound artist, LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs is the author of TwERK (Belladonna, 2013). She lives in Harlem.

Aby Kaupang is the author of Disorder 299.00, w/Matthew Cooperman, (Essay Press, 2016), Little “g” God Grows Tired of Me (Spring Gun, 2013), Absence is Such a Transparent House (Tebot Bach, 2011), and Scenic Fences | Houses Innumerable (Scantily Clad Press, 2008). Matthew Cooperman is the author of, most recently, Spool, winner of the New Measure Prize (Free Verse Editions/Parlor Press, 2016), Disorder 299.00 w/Aby Kaupang (Essay Press, 2016), the text + image collaboration Imago for the Fallen World, w/Marius Lehene (Jaded Ibis Press, 2013), and other books. A professor of English at Colorado State University, he is also co-poetry editor for Colorado Review. He lives in Fort Collins with his wife, the poet Aby Kaupang, and their two children.
Jena Osman's books of poems include Corporate Relations (Burning Deck, 2014), Public Figures (Wesleyan University Press, 2012), The Network (Fence Books 2010, selected for the National Poetry Series in 2009), An Essay in Asterisks (Roof Books, 2004) and The Character (Beacon Press, winner of the 1998 Barnard New Women Poets Prize). She founded and co-edited the journal Chain with Juliana Spahr for twelve years. She is a Professor of English at Temple University, where she currently directs the MFA Creative Writing Program.
Stacy Szymaszek is the author of A Year From Today, Journal of Ugly Sites & Other Journals, hart island, Emptied of All Ships, Hyperglossia, and many chapbooks. She has worked at Woodland Pattern Book Center in Milwaukee, WI and was the Director of The Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in New York City from 2007 to 2018.

Jennifer Soong is a New Jersey and New York-based poet. Her first full-length book, Near At, is forthcoming from Futurepoem. She received her B.A. in English and Visual & Environmental Studies from Harvard College before working at The New School and joining the English doctoral program at Princeton University, where she is currently working on forgetting in Modernism. Her poetry has been published in DIAGRAM, Fanzine, Berfrois, H_NGM_N, and others, and has been translated into Spanish. She is the poetry editor at Nat. Brut and thinks writing poems is a bit like going around with a metal detector while looking for pearls.
Robert Fitterman is the author of 12 books of poetry. He grew up in a small suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, called Creve Coeur. His street is still flanked by a Shell gas station on one side and a Mobile station on the other. His writing is kinda conceptual and sorta involves identity issues that are complicated by the web. And the Mall. Recent titles include: now we are friends (Truck Books), Rob the Plagiarist (Roof Books), and Notes On Conceptualisms, co-authored with Vanessa Place (Ugly Duckling Presse). Writer, educator and mindbody coach Kristin Prevallet’s work has long investigated memoir as material in search of a form. She is the author of five books of poetry including I, Afterlife: Essay In Mourning Time (Essay Press, 2007). Her most recent project is a conceptual memoir called Killing The False Woman Keeps the Live One From Breathing. Language is typically thought to enable the speaker to be understood by others, and not just on the level of a phrase, a question, or an argument, but as a person. Of course, we are disabused of this notion by our daily interactions as well as by critics, philosophers, and poets, and yet we make use of the tools that we hold in common. The artists and writers who are participating in Black Marks That Make up Letters are interested in the inadequacies of language as well as the possibility of communicating—and representing oneself—differently through abstraction, through what the poet Dawn Lundy Martin calls “unrecognizable speech” in “A Bleeding, an Autobiographical Tale” (2007). This brand of speech counters “the tyranny of the prosaic, the beautiful, the poetic utopia,” and characterizes the work of black experimental poets from Amiri Baraka to Claudia Rankine. “Where does language go limp,” Martin asks, and where is it encountered merely as “black marks that make up letters?”
The limits and repercussions of conventional expression, especially for black people in the United States, are of particular concern for the exhibition “Speech/Acts,” which is on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania and is the occasion for this event. “Language, incontestably, reveals the speaker,” writes James Baldwin in “If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?” (1979). “Language, also, far more dubiously, is meant to define the other—and, in this case, the other is refusing to be defined by a language that has never been able to recognize him.” The exhibition asks how to refuse such a language, how to alter the reality that is constituted through language, how else to communicate (or refuse to disclose) the experience of blackness, and what kinds of responses might follow. This question will be addressed through brief readings and a discussion by Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Morgan Parker, and Simone White, all of whom are participating in “Speech/Acts,” and Meg Onli, the curator of the exhibition.
Black Marks That Make up Letters is organized by Triple Canopy in collaboration with the ICA and Futurpeoem, which are copublishing the forthcoming “Speech/Acts” catalogue. The event is part of Triple Canopy’s Corrected Slogans series, which asks how conceptual strategies have transformed (and might still transform) conventional notions of expression and of reading—both as an exchange between an individual and text and as a public activation of the written word.
